Police watchdog investigating motor vehicle incident in Kelowna
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) has launched an investigation into a collision in Kelowna.
The police watchdog said the incident occurred on Highway 97 in Kelowna around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27.
The IIO said local Mounties reported members of the Uniform Gang Enforcement Team were in an unmarked police vehicle, driving behind a black two-door BMW that was heading north on the highway.
That BMW was then involved in a collision with a southbound Mitsubishi SUV that turned left to head east on Highway 33.
A woman in the Mitsubishi went into medical distress and was taken to hospital, but later died.
The IIO was notified of the incident and launched an investigation into the circumstances of the collision to determine if RCMP’s actions or inactions played any role in the woman’s death.
The police watchdog asked that any witnesses contact the agency at 1-855-446-8577 or through the IIO website.
