Two horseback riders were taken to hospital Tuesday after being thrown from their horses on trails off June Springs Road near Kelowna.
Central Okanagan Search and Rescue said the incident happened around 11 a.m. when the horses were startled by mountain bikers riding downhill on the multi-use trail network.
The riders’ companions remained at the scene and provided initial care until search and rescue crews arrived.
Medical, e-bike, ATV and UTV teams responded to stabilize the injured riders before they were transported to Kelowna General Hospital at about 1 p.m.
Central Okanagan Search and Rescue reminded trail users to be aware of others sharing the trails and to use caution when approaching horses, as sudden encounters can startle the animals and create dangerous situations.
