The Kelowna RCMP is preparing for a busy Halloween night, with additional officers deployed across the city to support traffic enforcement, pedestrian safety and calls for service.
In a reminder issued Thursday, police are urging families to plan their trick-or-treating routes, keep children visible after dark and take extra care around busy streets.
Parents are encouraged to establish a meeting point in case children become separated, while older children heading out without an adult should travel in groups, stick to familiar neighbourhoods and have an agreed-upon curfew.
Bright costumes, reflective tape and flashlights can help children stand out to drivers. Police also recommend face paint instead of masks that could obstruct vision.
Motorists are being asked to slow down and watch for children crossing unexpectedly, particularly near intersections, crosswalks and parked vehicles.
The RCMP is also reminding residents that fireworks and firecrackers are prohibited in Kelowna under the city’s Life and Safety Bylaw, unless used by a federally licensed fireworks supervisor during an approved display. Violations can result in fines.
