Fuhr says submarine project will create opportunities for B.C. workers

Kelowna MP Stephen Fuhr says the federal governments decision to move ahead with a new fleet of Royal Canadian Navy submarines will strengthen Canadas defence while creating new economic opportunities for British Columbia.
The federal government has selected German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems as the preferred supplier to begin negotiations on the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project, which will replace Canadas aging Victoria class submarines with a fleet of up to 12 modern vessels.
Fuhr, who serves as the Member of Parliament for Kelowna, said the project reflects Canadas new defence procurement strategy by partnering with trusted allies while creating long term benefits for Canadian workers and businesses.
“This is how we strengthen Canadas sovereignty, support Canadian workers and build the industrial base our country needs for the future,” Fuhr said in a statement posted to social media.
Fuhr said the proposal from Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems includes one of the most comprehensive economic benefit packages ever offered as part of a Canadian defence procurement project. He said the agreement is expected to create opportunities for Canadian companies to join global supply chains while supporting technology transfer, skills development and long term work in the marine and defence sectors.
The federal government expects to complete negotiations by the end of 2027. The first four submarines are scheduled for delivery in 2034, ahead of the planned retirement of the Royal Canadian Navys Victoria class fleet.
