Remembrance Day offers an opportunity to honour the heroes who served our country, remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and reflect on the freedoms we enjoy today.
Kelowna residents heading downtown for Wednesday’s ceremonies should also prepare for road closures and parking restrictions.
Several streets will close beginning at 8 a.m. Nov. 11 to accommodate the pre-ceremony parade, including Bernard Avenue between Water and Abbott streets, Abbott Street between Bernard and Lawrence avenues, and Lawrence Avenue between Abbott and Water streets.
Following the ceremony at the City Park Cenotaph, additional closures will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. along Lawrence Avenue between Abbott and Water streets, and Water Street between Lawrence Avenue and the Queensway traffic circle.
RCMP and traffic control personnel will be stationed along the parade routes. Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes.
City Hall will be closed for the day, while Parkinson Recreation Centre will operate from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Glenmore Landfill will maintain regular hours, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Flags at city properties and parks will be lowered to half-mast from sunrise to sunset in honour of those who served and sacrificed their lives.
Community ceremonies will also take place for Indigenous Veterans Day on Nov. 8 and Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.
